As in the Médoc, the official classification of Sauternes (sweet wines) dates back to 1855. The incontestable leader Château d'Yquem was given "Premier Grand Cru Classé" status followed by 23 other châteaux ranked
within "Premier Cru Classé" (11 total) and "Second Cru Classé" (12 total).
